Artist Call for Photos of Discarded Glass in the Environment

Call to Photographers: Photos of Waste/Discarded Glass in the Environment

Author/Contact: Cindy Coldiron Cacglass@aol.com

Please also monitor http://recycledglassartistcall.blogspot.com for information and updates. You can also email me for a document version of this information.

Background: I am very pleased to be writing a book for Schiffer books on Recycled Glass Sculpture. I think the time is right for such a book and I believe it will be the first book on this topic. Schiffer Books publishes about 250 books a yearson various art and collectibles topics. As part of this process, I am doing an international call to photographers to submit their best professional images of discarded or waste glass in the environment. I am looking for 20-30 photos to illustrate this issue and these photos will supplement the larger set of photos of recycled glass sculpture made from this discarded glass. This will be a lengthy process and the book will most likely be published next year.

Entry Rules:

1) Definition of Discarded/Waste Glass:

This includes any discarded, thrown away, post-consumer use waste glass that one might see in such places as a landfill, the street, in an alley, etc. I am leaving this interpretation as broad as possible. It could include bottle glass, window glass, tv glass, computer glass, etc.

2) Eligibility:

Open to photographers worldwide.

3) Entry Fees: None

4) Deadline:

All information and images must be submitted by April 30, 2010. If a significant reason will prevent you from meeting this deadline, please email me at cacglass@aol.com. Please note that I respond to emails during the week in the evening only.

5) Images:

A) You may submit up to 4 original and professional quality images in JPEG or Tiff format.

B) In general, individual files should not exceed 5 MB. In order to get the best finished product, you will need to have a higher resolution, more megapixels and a high DPI. If you right click on a photo thumbnail image on your own computer, you will see the resolution size (1000 x 1200 for example).

C) Photo Resolution:

“Four-color digital images to be printed in four
color: TIFF of JPEG files prepared in AdobeRGB 1998
color mode at a minimum of 350 dpi at a 4 x 6 inch
image size. If it is likely that the image will be larger
than 4 x 6 in the printed book, the image sent must be
at least 360 dpi at the size anticipated. For example, in
an 8 1/2 x 11 inch book, a full page image would need
to be 8 1/2 x 11" with a resolution of 350 dpi. This is a
pretty big image and will take a very good camera to
achieve. A camera that has the capacity of at least six
(6) megapixels must be used. Images must be captured
at 350 dpi in their final size and not converted
from a lower dpi.
• One-color digital images (black-and-white) for
use as one color halftones: TIFF files prepared in
grayscale mode at a minimum of 350 dpi at a 4 x 6 inch
image size. Again, if it is likely that the image will be
larger than 4 x 6 in the printed book, the image sent
must be at least 360 dpi at the size anticipated. A
camera that has the capacity of at least six (6)
megapixels must be used.”

D. My understanding of the above information (suggested minimum to maximum photo resolution sizes):
For the minimum size photo needed: a 4 x 6 JPEG/Tiff photo:

1,400 DPI x 2,100 DPI = 2,940,000 DPI or 2.94 MP (NOT A file Size! Not MB)

UP TO and INCLUDING (can exceed this resolution as well)

For the maximum size photo needed: 8.5 x 11 JPEG /Tiff photo:

2975 DPI x 3850 DPI = 11, 453,750 DPI or 11.4 MP (not a file Size! Not MB)
***So all photos submitted must ideally be between 1400 x 2100 DPI resolution up to and including 2975 x 3850 dpi resolution. If you exceed the maximum resolution noted, that is ok. If you choose to submit photos in the smaller resolution range, it cannot be juried by me and selected for consideration beyond the 4” x 6” in size in the book.

E. Naming of Photo:

Save each photo with the following name noted below and email them to cacglass@aol.com (along with the information specified in part G). My aol email can only receive a total of 25 MB at one time so if you are sending multiple emails, please indicate that fact in the email subject heading “waste glass photo submissions; 1 of 2 emails….etc)
Name each file as “Last name First Name Image 1of4.jpg “
Example: If you submitted 4 images:
Smith Jane Image 1of 4.jpg
Smith Jane Image 2of 4.jpg
And so forth.

F) Photo Release:

For the photos I select, I will email you a photography release for your photos. You must sign and return the release to me. This photo release is not a final guarantee that your photos will appear in the book. Should any resolution issues occur with selected photos, I will try my best to give you an opportunity to correct the issue. Submission of your photos or other materials to this call do not guarantee acceptance. Please double check to make certain you meet the photo specifications.

G) Information to Include in the Body of the Email:

List each file name submitted; place/location photo was taken; approximate date of photo; description of the photo (for example, this is a photo of glass bottles that washed up on a beach in Biloxi, Mississippi).

Please also list your name, address, phone, email address.

Email all photos and the requested information to Cacglass@aol.com

Good luck to All!

Cindy
