Hi All:

I understand the book is expected to be placed on the Fall 2011 schedule for publication. I think this is great for all of us since that puts us closer to the time people are thinking of holiday shopping and gifts. Again, this could change but this is the most current information. As I mentioned before, for almost any type of book, it is typically 12-18 months from the time the publisher has the book draft to publication.

When the book is 1-2 months from being available for purchase, you should receive an email from the publisher about the book being available for purchase (no obligation to buy of course). Only at that point do we all go into full promotion with specific book details (# photos, topics, # of artists, etc). If you have any questions prior to this time next fall, please continue to contact me and not the publisher. I am continuing to finalize the book over the next month so please continue to promptly provide any requested verifications of caption information or any other information needed.

I will try to see if I can send out the 100 or so word book press blurb in the Spring. You will receive a copy of the lengthier press announcement from me about 1-2 months prior to the book publication. As with any art opportunity, our role should not end (ideally) when the book is about to be published. In the meantime, please continue to promote the book and your work in it (see prior suggested guidance on not using more than one photo of your work and suggested citation for your resume). Please do not embellish beyond the information that has been provided at this point in time and please keep the information accurate. As some of you know, I have google alerts and I do find out about any "over zealousness" or inaccuracies on the book very quickly. :)

On a side note, I am in an upcoming book by Schiffer Publishing titled "Art Glass Today." It was edited by Jeffrey Snyder. Please take a look at the cover on Amazon.com when you have a chance so you can be familiar with how the Schiffer Books are so beautifully designed. You will also note that no detailed info was released on this book until 2 months or so prior to publication.

Bribes!!!!

I mentioned in an earlier post all the emails I was receiving from artists who missed the book deadline(even with all the extensions)for photo submissions. And a few have been way over the line in their demands and lack of professionalism.

But now comes the "worst" (or best?) example of all! I received a bribe offer! Even when I gently told this artist "no" and said that she was asking me to spend a week or more reorganizing the entire book and captions to accommodate her, she was ok with that fact! She then offered me a bribe of her jewelry in exchange. I was surprised that this artist, who claimed she taught at a university, would not know this was very unethical conduct. As an author of an upcoming book, I can accept no compensation in exchange for an artist's work being in my book. She chose to respond again by saying that she was was not offering me a bribe but "payment for my time" (???) Now what was this time? Time spent working on the book. A bribe is a bribe.

On the plus side, it seems like artists who let the deadlines slip through the cracks, have realized that they missed a potential opportunity to be in a great book!

The key part of my second response to her is below. I will also be doing a post on myartgrant.blogspot.com on art press and gifts and compensation in the very near future.

In addition, you should know that for me to accept a piece of work or compensation for allowing you into the book would be very unethical and I do not operate in that manner. Offering bribes for something like that is unprofessional and unethical and I am surprised that someone who teaches at an university would engage in such activity.

Again, I am sorry for your loss but this discussion has ended.

Reminder: Photo Submissions are Closed for the Book

I am still receiving a fair amount of photo submissions by artists not in the book saying they missed the deadline, it fell "through the cracks", etc. A number of them asked me to reconsider my deadline. Again, the response is "no". I am not even opening emailed photos.

The deadline for photo submissions expired a long time ago, even with the multiple extensions. I will not be reorganizing and recaptioning photos to allow additional photos. I have a wealth of wonderful photos. This would not be fair to me, the other artists or the book deadline.

I feel a time management lecture coming on..... :)

Captioning of Photos and Verification of Photo Information

I am in the process of captioning the photos for each chapter and will be sending out this information in the next week or two to each artist for verification of their name, title of each work, dimensions, materials, and photo courtesy. In some cases, bio and technique info may be sent for verification as well.

This information will need to be verified as correct or the corrections must be clearly noted and emailed back to me within seven days. It will be the responsibility of each artist to note any corrections to this information in a timely manner. If you will have any difficulty meeting this deadline, I will need to be notified prior to the deadline (not the day of the deadline). If I do not hear back, I will assume all the information is correct and will not be making corrections after 7 days. For corrections sent after 7 days, the photos needing caption corrections may be deleted from the book.

So everyone please take the deadline seriously as I know the majority of the artists in the book have done so. My obligation is to the publisher and to the artists who have supplied all the needed information timely. I have far more wonderful pictures than I am required to have per the book contract and I hope to keep all of them in the book.

Unfortunately, two artists in the introduction section had their single photos removed the other day because they would not sign a photo release despite numerous attempts on my part to obtain this info from them. While this was unfortunate, I feel this may profit these individuals in the long run in terms of their understanding that the inability to meet deadlines (with two long extensions in this case) has to be having a less than positive effect on their art careers. I do not subscribe to the philosophy that because we are all such creative people, we are not bound by standard conventions, deadlines and legal forms. I have noticed the the most successful artists turn any requested information around very quickly and I think this has much to do with their success.

Posting of Personal Contact Info From Acceptance Letter

It has come to my attention that at least one artist posted my home address and phone number from the acceptance letter in a community glass board. This personal information was provided only as a personal convenience for submission of the photo release form. If you have posted such info on any website, blog, forum, community board, etc., it needs to be removed immediately. I reserve the right to remove accepted work from the book if I find other incidents.

While I understand the excitement to be in the upcoming book, a reasonable level of good sense still needs to be exercised. Posting of such personal information is not acceptable in any circumstance.

Book Contact-Please Exercise Caution

Although I am sure everyone knows this, I am the sole contact for all book questions and communications about your accepted work, the book schedule, etc. My team consists of "me, myself and I." ;) I have had some difficulty with someone who is not in the book soliciting for a role in this book. So please do not respond to any emails on the book unless it comes from me at Cacglass@aol.com. The only parties to the book contract are myself and Schiffer Publishing. You will not be receiving any communication from Schiffer at this point until(perhaps)the book is ready for sale.

Advertising Summary on the Book

Happy 4th of July to everyone!

In response to several questions, I will be posting a one-two paragraph advertising summary on the book about six months prior to publication. So this will not occur before early next year. When this information is posted, feel free to use it to advertise the book as well.

No additional information will be provided on the book prior to that time which is the standard practice. So questions on whether this or that artist is also in the book, number of overall photos in the book, asking if your work is better than the others, etc. cannot be answered.

I would advise all accepted artists to check out the publishers website (www.schifferbooks.com)to obtain an overview of their art and glass related books.

Thoughts on Posting Photos of Your Accepted Work Prior to the Book Being Published

When I have work accepted for publication in a book or magazine, in contrast to a juried exhibition, I make it a rule not to post photos of the accepted works on my blog or website. While I do mention it on my resume and on my website schedule of exhibitions and events (i.e., "2010 Art Glass Today, Edited by Jeffrey Snyder, Schiffer Publishing), I never go as far as to say for example "I had four photos accepted for the magazine story, book, etc. and here are the photos."

To do so takes away the surprise of the publication. And if your friends, family, clients, and the whole world already have seen the actual photos of your art works that are going to be in the book, there really is no incentive for them or others to purchase the book or buy the magazine to read the article. As an artist you want to create anticipation for your work and what you are doing next. Advertise away about the book and your place in it of course but hold some things back.

If you look at the resumes of experienced artists, the standard practice and unwritten protocol is to simply reference the upcoming publication as mentioned above and at most, include ONE photo.

All Requested Bio Information and Signed Photo Releases Are Needed By This Friday

Since we all have a shared interest in this book staying on schedule, for the very small handful of artists whom have not sent in bio info and a signed photo release, I need all the information by this Friday. There is an updated fax # so please email me for the number.

Also, for the few artists who received conditional acceptances pending higher resolution photos, if I have not heard back from you by Friday with a status update, you may risk losing your place in the book. This does not apply to artists who have kept me up to date on their upgraded photo status.

Reminder on the Photo Releases For Accepted Sculpture!

Please send the PHOTO RELEASE to me and NOT to the publisher. I have to match and confirm releases to the photos in my draft book and if you mail it to the publisher versus to me, this causes a delay in my work on the book. If your photographer is sending your release, you need to make certain the photographer is aware that the release is to be sent to me.

Citation to the Upcoming Book on Your Artist Resume

Several artists have asked for the proper format to reference their work being accepted for the upcoming book on *Recycled Glass Sculpture and Design (*working title).

I would suggest not referencing the number of accepted photos for the book but simply listing it on your resume in a manner similar to the example below:

Photo Release Rules-Important-Please Read

For those of you with accepted photos for the book that were taken by someone other than yourself, I will accept an additional release from your photographer. However, YOU ALSO STILL NEED TO SIGN A RELEASE FORM.

Please do not have your photographers contact me for photo discussions or copyright discussions. All discussions on the release are between you and your photographer. They may of course send a signed release to me.

Rolling Notices are Being Sent on the Recycled Glass Sculpture Call

Thanks to all of the successful applicants to date who had amazingly original work and techniques. And thanks for working with me to obtain the best photos as possible for the book. Great photos help make a successful art book and we are all creating history with this first book on Recycled Glass Sculpture and Design. The majority of the general public is unfamiliar with the look and techniques of recycled glass so our photos have to educate as well.

And a friendly reminder: Everyone has to fill out and sign the photo release to allow use of the photos. No photos will appear in the book without a signed release.

Question on Photo Call for Discarded Glass in the Environment

Please note that I am looking for "nitty gritty" photos of discarded/waste glass in the environment. I am not necessarily looking for "pretty pics" or for the discarded glass to be altered or "artistically rearranged" in the photos. I need the photo to show the glass in its found/discarded position. For example, a broken glass bottle in an alley; bottles scattered throughout a landfill, etc.

The details can be found in a post at the end of this blog.

Sculpture vs Craft and an Update

I have had a few questions on the issue of Sculpture vs Craft? Although the focus of this book is on recycled glass sculpture, there will be a smaller section in the book on recycled glass craft. Work that has more of a utilitarian purpose probably falls under the definition of "craft". However, if in doubt, please go ahead and submit your work!!! There are no entry fees.

Submissions are starting to come in from all over the United States and the world. The deadline is April 30, 2010. This is a great potential opportunity to be a part of the very first book dedicated to recycled glass sculpture.

1) All artists may of course add frits, powders, paints, metal foils, etc. (or none) to their recycled glass. The design is up to you!

2) I cannot advise you on what to create or how to create it.

3) Soliciting to have a role in "pre-reviewing" or "editing" the book before it is out, is not part of the entry process. When the book enters the market next year, artists in the book will be notified and have an opportunity to purchase as many copies as they wish.

Background: I am very pleased to be writing a book for Schiffer books on Recycled glass sculpture. I think the time is right for such a book and I believe it will be the first book on this topic. Schiffer Books publishes about 250 books a year on various art and collectible topics. As part of this process, I am doing an international call to artists to submit their best professional and original images of their recycled glass sculpture. This will be a lengthy process and the book will most likely be published next year.

Entry Rules:

1) Definition of Recycled Glass:

I would like all entrants to apply a very stringent and ethical definition here. This does not include leftover fusible “scrap” art glass from your studio (or anywhere else) or purchased sheets of float glass.
The recycled glass must have been found and/or donated and/or discarded and not purchased beyond a very nominal fee (not a fair value, wholesale or retail price).
Types of recycled glass may include window glass, found discarded broken glass vessels, auto glass, bottle glass, building glass, tabletop/plate glass, computer glass, TV glass, etc.

2) Eligibility:

Open to recycled glass artists worldwide.

3) Entry Fees: None

4) Eligible Recycled Glass Sculpture:

The sculpture (indoor or outdoor, including public works) must be a minimum of 50% recycled glass. However, the more recycled glass content, the better. Mixed media works are also welcome. I also consider vessels to be sculpture. The book will focus on recycled glass sculpture in the following applications: 1) warm glass (cast and/or fused); 2) cold glass (stained, using glass in its original found form, etc); 3) Hot glass (blown glass). The vast majority of the works will be in categories 1 and 2. No jewelry submissions.

5) Deadline:

All information and images must be submitted by April 30, 2010. If a significant reason will prevent you from meeting this deadline, please email me at cacglass@aol.com. Please note that I respond to emails during the week in the evening only.

6) Images:

A) You may submit up to 5 high professional quality images in JPEG or Tiff format. Please use white, black, gray or neutral backgrounds

B) In general, individual files should not exceed 5 MB. In order to get the best finished product, you will need to have a higher resolution, more megapixels and a high DPI. If you right click on a photo thumbnail image on your own computer, you will see the resolution size (1000 x 1200 for example).

C) Photo Resolution:

“Four-color digital images to be printed in four
color: TIFF of JPEG files prepared in AdobeRGB 1998
color mode at a minimum of 350 dpi at a 4 x 6 inch
image size. If it is likely that the image will be larger
than 4 x 6 in the printed book, the image sent must be
at least 360 dpi at the size anticipated. For example, in
an 8 1/2 x 11 inch book, a full page image would need
to be 8 1/2 x 11" with a resolution of 350 dpi. This is a
pretty big image and will take a very good camera to
achieve. A camera that has the capacity of at least six
(6) megapixels must be used. Images must be captured
at 350 dpi in their final size and not converted
from a lower dpi.
• One-color digital images (black-and-white) for
use as one color halftones: TIFF files prepared in
grayscale mode at a minimum of 350 dpi at a 4 x 6 inch
image size. Again, if it is likely that the image will be
larger than 4 x 6 in the printed book, the image sent

D. My understanding of the above information (suggested minimum to maximum photo resolution sizes):
For the minimum size photo needed: a 4 x 6 JPEG/Tiff photo:

1,400 DPI x 2,100 DPI = 2,940,000 DPI or 2.94 MP (NOT A file Size! Not MB)

UP TO and INCLUDING (can exceed this resolution as well)

For the maximum size photo needed: 8.5 x 11 JPEG /Tiff photo:

2975 DPI x 3850 DPI = 11, 453,750 DPI or 11.4 MP (Not a file Size! Not MB)
***So all photos submitted must ideally be between 1400 x 2100 DPI resolution up to and including 2975 x 3850 dpi resolution. If you exceed the maximum resolution noted, that is ok. List each file name submitted; place/location photo was taken; approximate date of photo; description of the photo (for example, this is a photo of glass bottles that washed up on a beach in Biloxi, Mississippi).

Please also list your name, address, phone, email address.
